Brick Kiln Bricks

What is Buniyaad?

Every construction begins with a strong foundation. It is the foundation that gives strength, durability, and stability to any structure. And as our name suggests — we are that very 'Buniyaad' from where the direction of development is set.

Buniyaad is a multi-stakeholder platform that brings together brick kiln owners & associations, the workers employed there, their organizations, community leaders, NGOs, think-tanks, art & culture groups, media and decision makers. Our goal is to collectively design policies and solutions that protect the environment while promoting the use of new and improved technologies in the brick kiln industry.

At the same time, we strive to ensure dignity and a safe working environment for the workers, so that the brick-making industry and the lives of all those associated with it become better and more prosperous.

Our Objectives

  • The Buniyaad initiative strives to bring together all stakeholders of the brick kiln industry on a common platform, so that collective efforts can lead to reform and positive change in this sector.

  • Our aim is to develop a clean, just, and inclusive action plan for policy and technological transition that strengthens environmental standards and social responsibility.

  • Buniyaad seeks to make new technologies and clean fuels more accessible and practical within the brick kiln industry.

  • To ensure a just transition in the industry, Buniyaad works to provide workers with access to education, healthcare, housing, social security schemes, and opportunities to learn new skills—so they can adapt easily to emerging technologies.

  • Buniyaad is also committed to helping brick kiln owners access financial support so they can adopt new practices and improvements.

  • We aim to make this campaign people-centric by using art and culture as powerful mediums of connection and awareness.

  • Buniyaad envisions that technological advancements in the brick kiln industry should also directly benefit local communities.

Udaan Fellowship –
An Initiative of Chambal Academy

The Udaan Fellowship, launched by Chambal Academy, is an initiative focused on social and climate justice, aimed at empowering women and girls working in the brick kiln industry. This five-month fellowship provides women with a platform to become storymakers, enabling them to share their climate-related experiences and perspectives. Under the fellowship, 15 women and girls from the interior regions of Uttar Pradesh are collecting ground-level stories from families associated with the brick kiln industry and working to raise awareness about climate change policies. This program is a strong step towards amplifying women’s voices and strengthening issues related to climate justice.

Under the Buniyaad Campaign, we are collaborating with the prestigious organization Khabar Lahariya. Together, we are trying to highlight the realities of brick kiln workers and non-worker communities. We aim to bring stories related to social, economic, and environmental aspects of just reforms in Uttar Pradesh’s brick kiln industry to a public platform.
